Why abdominal massage is important to your self-care
When you think of your tummy, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Probably not a massage, right? In fact, it seems that sometimes the mere idea of someone seeing your tummy let alone touching it can make you cringe. But, let’s take a step back to when we were little kids, a time before puberty and before we were exposed to the magazine articles and television ads telling us what “beautiful” was supposed to look like; to a time before we started hiding our tummy’s and instead thought nothing of running around in our undies and giggling at “zerberts” and “tickles”.
Once you are there, place your hands on your tummy just below your belly button. Can you feel that? That is your Sacral Chakra which can not only relate to our feelings of self worth but when it is out of balance can be associated with things such as lower back pain, urinary tract infections, and even issues related to fertility. Our tummy houses the essential components of our digestive and reproductive system which are both kind of a big deal. And by kind of I mean absolutely, positively a big deal. Abdominal massage helps make sure that all of those things are working in homeostasis and in turn helps to Improve Digestive Function, Boost the Immune System, Decrease PMS Symptoms, Release Physical and Emotional Stress, and more.
Now that I have shared with you some of the benefits of abdominal (tummy) massage, I hope that you’ll consider including it during your next massage session. Or, at the very least, show your tummy some love as part of your daily self-care routine. As a Drill Sergeant once told me when she saw me try to fluff out my shirt that the Army required be tucked into my shorts, “Don’t try to hide your tummy. It is yours – be proud of it!”
