We are quickly approaching the end of the year and the start of the next.  This often means that the quest for a healthier lifestyle is hot on many minds.  With Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas being big foodie holidays we know that working off all the deliciousness is a high priority.  So we thought that maybe if we came up with some simple changes you can make now then perhaps starting the New Year will be easier for you!  So, if you are ready to make these 8 small changes in your life you will meet a healthier and happier you in no time!

Lose 1 Pound Per Week

One pound a week is pretty minimal when you think about it.  And if you commit to it now, by this time next year you will find that the new healthier you is 52 pounds lighter.  If you are currently overweight, you don’t have to drop all 52 pounds before you see some serious health benefits!  If you lose just 5 to 10 percent of your current body weight, you will reap the benefits of improved blood pressure, better cholesterol levels and lower blood sugars.  These seemingly minor improvements will also reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes, both of which are major health risks!

Take an Extra Lap Around the Store

In your quest to find the healthier you, if you find that you are out shopping at least once a week in a big box store such as Wal-Mart, take a preliminary lap around the the inside of the stores perimeter.  Not only can you scope out the sales but you will walk a whopping 12 extra miles after a year of doing this!  And in the cold winter months that we endure here in the Ballston Spa and Saratoga Springs area of upstate NY, the mall is a great place to walk and window shop!

Take the Stairs

Did you know that by taking the stairs you burn double the calories that you would if you just rode the elevator?!  Trust us, losing that extra pound a week to find your inner healthy person will be so  much easier when you scorch those calories by taking the stairs!  Just think, if you can manage those daunting looking stairs then you could easily take on anything!

Cut One Cookie per Day

Yeah, we said it.  We hate to say it but cutting out just one cookie per day can cut those calories.  By next year you can effectively cut 21,170 (more or less) calories from your diet.  Cutting that amount of calories can mean that you also were able to cut 6 pounds from your waistline as well!  And, if you cut more than one cookie (or other daily sweet) then you can lose more!

Swap Oil for Butter

This is a great tip if you want to cut your risk of heart disease.  This one little swap out can cut that risk by 19 percent in the next year!  However, you cannot just swap out with any oil nor can you have an unnatural amount of it.  All things in moderation is a great rule.  If you opt for a lite olive oil, soybean oil or canola oil you will barely notice a difference in the taste of your food yet help your body become so much more healthy!

Cut Your Screen Time

We all love to curl up in front of the ole’ television and zone out.  But by cutting a few hours of screen time from our weekly lives, we can slash our risk of an early death.  You see, it’s not the television that is the silent killer in this scenario but the sitting for prolonged periods of time with little to no activity.  Some researchers have said that sitting for long periods of time can suppress enzymes that are involved in metabolism of fats or somehow adversely affect cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and other vital processes in the body.  This is not about just going to the gym to reverse these affects either, research has shown that simply standing and moving more during the day will in fact be helpful.

Reach Out to One Old Friend per Month

We as humans are social creatures.  If you reach out to one old friend per month to rekindle the friendship or just to strengthen the bond that it already there, that is 12 people that you have made a positive impact upon!  And if those 12 people do the same thing then there are more healthy and happy people to come into contact with!  Mental health carries a big ugly stigma with it.  Many people don’t realize that the simple act of reaching out to someone to show them that you care can actually save a life!  Don’t you want to live in a happier, healthier, more loving world?  We do to!  So reach out and love someone today.  If reaching out to only one person per month is not enough then have at it!  We feel that the more people you reach out to and make a positive impact on the more happy people there will be.

Go To Bed One Minute Earlier

Yep, one little minute earlier to bed can net you an extra hour of sleep in as little as 2 months pretty painlessly.  And, going to bed one minute earlier per day for an entire year will gain you an extra 6 hours per night!  Listen, sleep is vital to life.  Not only will you save money on all the coffee that you will no longer need to buy but you will feel so much better in the long run.  You will wake feeling more restored and be able to accomplish all those lists of things that you and your partner have been too tired to tackle for the last 3 years!  An added bonus is that you will diminish your risk of obesity, diabetes and heart problems.  You will also say goodbye to your inability to focus, decrease your potential of sleep related car accidents and increase your memory capacity!

We would say that these are some very compelling reasons to make these small changes for big improvements in your life!  Of course there are many other ways to find a healthier you.  Some things such as booking a massage or taking some time to relax with some essential oils or even taking time to have a reiki session can have big impacts on your health!  We certainly look forward to being part of your journey and cannot wait to see you here at Bella Nani Salon and Day Spa!
