Lets face it, as much as we all try to stick to our fitness plans during the colder weather, the shorter days sometimes lead to less working out and more binge watching Netflix. Then before we know it,  the days start getting longer, the temperature starts to rise, and you realize that swimsuit season is right around the corner! Uh oh! Time to get back into shape…but where do you start?  Here are some tips that may help you along.

First of all…Don’t beat yourself up Getting back into a workout routine is not easy. There may be days when you give in to the “couch”. And that is OK.  Start slow…do not beat yourself up and give up.  Give yourself some wiggle room and cut yourself some slack, especially when you just start. Start small 1-2 days a week for 20-30 minutes and gradually build up.  Don’t let missing a single day crush your spirit and send you back to the “couch”!

Find a workout partner Did you know that it has been said that not having someone to exercise with is a barrier to a fitness routine among both men and women? There are many benefits to working out with a friend.  Accountability is one of the ways to break that barrier. There is strength in numbers, they say.  A fitness partner can not only help motivate you when you don’t feel like working out but can give you that extra push of motivation during a routine, plus someone to laugh with and perhaps yell with when you have to push each other to finish those last few sit ups or bicep curls.

Choose the workout that’s best for you – One of the most important things is to choose a workout that you will actually enjoy doing. As you’re reestablishing a fitness/training routine, it’s a lot easier to convince yourself to go if you’re looking forward to it. Use this as an opportunity to try a new group fitness class like HIIT or Pilates. Not only will being in a group or simply with your workout partner help motivate you, a new type of class set to upbeat music will help the time pass quickly.
